Buck Avenue Bridge Replacement
Project Description
The Buck Avenue over Alamo Creek Bridge Replacement Project in Vacaville, California, was a significant infrastructure initiative aimed at enhancing structural integrity and safety. The original bridge, constructed in 1947, was deemed functionally obsolete by Caltrans, necessitating its replacement with a modern structure.
Knight CM Group was selected by the City of Vacaville as the prime consultant for construction management and structure representative services on this project (Federal Project No. BRLS 5094(066)). The project involved replacing the existing single-span bridge with a new, cast-in-place, prestressed slab bridge supported by 36-inch cast-in-drilled-hole (CIDH) piles to improve structural integrity and safety. To maintain pedestrian accessibility during construction, a temporary pedestrian bridge was installed. Environmental considerations were addressed through stream diversion and adherence to restricted work windows to minimize impacts.
Key construction activities included the removal of the old bridge, installation of CIDH piles, construction of falsework, and relocation of utilities such as gas, water, and overhead electrical systems. Compliance with environmental regulations was ensured through biological monitoring and the implementation of a Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) at Risk Level 2. Knight CM Group prioritized local access, meticulous planning, and effective stakeholder communication to deliver a high-quality infrastructure upgrade in full compliance with federal, state, and local standards. The project also encompassed the replacement of the existing 18-inch water transmission main across the creek with a new ductile iron pipe, addressing maintenance challenges associated with the old steel main.
The project area was carefully defined to ensure a seamless transition to the surrounding road network and cohesive integration of the updated infrastructure into the existing transportation system. This collaborative effort between Knight CM Group, the City of Vacaville, and other stakeholders resulted in a modernized bridge that meets current safety and design standards, significantly benefiting the local community.
