Marsh Creek Bridge Replacement

Project Description

The Marsh Creek Road Bridges Replacement Project in Contra Costa County was a critical infrastructure improvement aimed at enhancing transportation safety and reliability along Marsh Creek Road. This project replaced two aging bridges—Bridge 143, located approximately 1.5 miles northwest of Deer Valley Road near the Clayton Palms Community, and Bridge 145, situated about three miles east of Deer Valley Road near the transition to Camino Diablo. The existing structures had reached the end of their service life, necessitating modern replacements that could better accommodate current traffic demands and improve overall roadway conditions.

Knight CM Group was selected as the prime consultant to provide comprehensive construction inspection services for the project. The work involved removing the outdated bridges and replacing them with new, single-span concrete precast/prestressed wide-flange girder bridges. To ensure stability and long-term structural integrity, reinforced concrete abutments were installed, supported by cast-in-drilled-hole (CIDH) concrete piles. The project also included extensive roadway realignment and reconstruction, ensuring a seamless transition between the new structures and the existing road network.

The scope of work encompassed a wide range of construction activities, including site preparation with tree removal, demolition of the existing bridges, and staged roadway construction to maintain traffic flow during the build. Drainage facilities were upgraded to improve stormwater management, while essential utility relocations were coordinated to minimize disruptions to local services. Throughout the project, Knight CM Group provided resident engineering, structure inspection, and rigorous oversight of the contractor’s adherence to project plans and specifications, ensuring that all work met the highest standards of safety and quality. Additional responsibilities included reviewing falsework, verifying material quantities, monitoring traffic control measures, and maintaining detailed project documentation.

Traffic management was a key focus throughout the construction period to minimize disruptions for motorists and residents. Effective control measures and signage were implemented to ensure a safe work environment while maintaining accessibility for road users. By the project’s completion, the Marsh Creek Road Bridges Replacement provided a significant improvement to the region’s transportation infrastructure. The modernized bridges offer enhanced safety, greater durability, and improved connectivity, benefiting both local commuters and regional traffic flow.
